Deuteronomy 4 (NIV)

Obedience Commanded
1 Now, Israel, hear the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.……Continue Reading

  1. We can be such a forgetful people with time and trial. We forget ALL God has done for us when we become afraid or tired or even just as time passes. Sometimes maybe we need a recounting of our personal lives like Moses gave the people here of all that God has done for them and the consequences they have experienced in their times of disobedience. Idolatry comes out of anything we put before God, which happens much easier than we care to admit. Just because we aren’t creating gold structures doesn’t make idolatry any less destructive to our walk with God. Work, kids, even works done with the wrong spirit are things that we can potentially put before God and like Moses says ” the Lord is God; besides him there is no other.” so it should always be Him first and everything else second.

  2. Before giving them the law, Moses lays out all that God had done for them and how He had revealed Himself even going back to creation. How unique their experience was compared to other nations and thereby how privileged they were to have Him as their God. Who else had He chosen as a nation and been so personal with? All of this should give ample reason for them to not make idols or worship the false gods of other nations. They were to worship the creator not the created! And couldn’t we also make a list of all that God is and all that He has done for us that would cause us to turn away from the idols in our lives and our world. Certainly that is the case. So, far better reasons for us to follow God and obey Him whole heartedly.

  3. ”Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. You shall therefore keep His statutes and His commandments which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”“
    ‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭4‬:‭39‬-‭40‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

  4. Deuteronomy 4
“I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today, that you will certainly perish quickly from the land where you are going over the Jordan to take possession of it. You will not live long on it, but will be utterly destroyed.”
    ‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭4‬:‭26‬ ‭NASB2020‬‬

I love this verse. It shows how seriously we should take sin. When a people turn away from God it’s like nature itself works as an agent of God’s righteousness and turns against you.

  5. As reminded here in this chapter; we should remember when going through hard times how in the past the Lord has always been there for us. He is always faithful and will work it all out even when we don`t understand it. God bless you all.

  6. Deuteronomy 4
God was so specific saying in His teaching, not to add anything or subtract anything from the commands that God has given you.
How fortunate we are to have God near us. We need to remember all the things we have seen . Do not forget them, but keep them in our hearts. He said to teach the generations. The Lord taught of the covenant and 10 commandments. He warns them to have no idols, whether human or animals of the land or fish or the wonders in the sky! God let’s us know if you fail we can turn to the word of God to do what he says. We are still blessed today that we have a merciful God. He will not abandon or destroy us . He kept his word.. thru the generations.
