Reading along with us in Deuteronomy and Corinthians? Here’s today’s reading:
Deuteronomy 3 (NIV)
Defeat of Og King of Bashan
1 Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei. 2 The Lord said to me, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land.……Continue Reading
What an encouragement for Joshua entering this new land to hear about all the victories God has given His people to get to this place. To know that God is with them and helping to pave the way ahead of them. Moses certainly has a moment at the end of the chapter where he is obviously frustrated that he will not be entering. A small parent child moment between he and God where he knows the consequence for his action but still needs to vent and God simply replies with a “we are not discussing this again” it does reveal a closeness between Moses and God that was not typical with others of this time.
Deuteronomy 2and 3
God was faithful and powerful to provide victory for the Jews against these people that the Jews were willing to just walk around. And how interesting the detail of the 13 foot bed, showing an end had come to a clan of “giants”. And yet he was no match to the people led and empowered by God. Moses also makes sure he reminds the Reubenites, Gadites and half tribe of Manessah that they were to help their brothers secure their land before they could rest in theirs. It was the deal Moses made when those tribes initially requested that their lands would be on the East side of the Jordan. And whereas at times God is willing to have conversations honoring the wishes of people and even negotiating terms, here He tells Moses…don’t even bring it up again. It is very much God’s prerogative when He would be open and when He is not. It is something important to remember in our interaction with Him as well. But He knows best what lessons would be important for the people then and throughout history and the greater responsibility of those in leadership.
