Amos 4 (NIV)

Israel Has Not Returned to God
1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria,
you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy
and say to your husbands, “Bring us some drinks!”
2 The Sovereign Lord has sworn by his holiness:
“The time will surely come
when you will be taken away with hooks,
the last of you with fishhooks
3 You will each go straight out
through breaches in the wall,
and you will be cast out toward Harmon

  1. Strong words from God through Amos here. There were some who were living high on the hog and taking advantage of those below them in Jewish society, being prideful and glutinous in their ways. But they will be dealt with harshly when the time comes. God even uses a bit of reverse psychology encouraging them to do things that they were doing that were clearly wrong. Even the right things they were doing were being done with the wrong heart. Let’s make sure we are genuine in our dealings with God. Then God lists all the hardships that He has brought on them, the very things God intended to bring repentance. And yet they have not returned to Him. God is always working to draw us to Himself. The question is whether we go willingly or unwillingly. It is always best to follow willingly, but be extra careful when God turns up the heat, that we are heeding His discipline.

  2. All of these things come upon Israel, but they do not turn to God.

    “Therefore thus will I do to you, O Israel;
Because I will do this to you,
Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!”
    For behold,
    He who forms mountains,
    And creates the wind,
Who declares to man what his thought is,
    And makes the morning darkness,
Who treads the high places of the earth—
The Lord God of hosts is His name.”

  3. God is always concerned with our character and our hearts. He draws attention not only to Israel’s treatment of others as well as the appearance of being good….doing the right things with the wrong motivation.
It’s a good reminder that we can hide nothing from God He always knows even are sins that are not so externally obvious.

  4. The Lord punishes Israel, yet they do not repent of their sin. Because they continue to give him thank offerings, they think they will be forgiven. God will not accept it so he tells them that more destruction will come upon them. This is true of us too when we are going down the wrong path. It will lead to destruction even if we continue to go to church and tithe. He warns us through cirumstances so that we repent and follow his way because he loves us and he wants to bless us.
    2 Corinthians 9:8 (NIV)
And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
