Amos 3 (NIV)

Witnesses Summoned Against Israel
1 Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the Lord has spoken against you—against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:
2 “You only have I chosen
of all the families of the earth;
therefore I will punish you
for all your sins.”

  1. Through Amos God is clear in this chapter about the coming judgment and that it would be Him delivering that. He wanted them to be sure and know this is a direct result of their disobedience and their refusal despite constant warnings to repent. God didn’t want them to think they hit a string a bad luck but to know actions have consequences and this would be theirs!

  2. How unique God’s call on Israel was, and yet in time they appear to be no different because of it. May that not be true of us, not only because following God is the best and the truest path to take, but also to not follow brings God’s disfavor. When certain things happen in life, we know exactly why and what it means automatically. So when calamity comes on God’s people, what conclusion does that bring. God must be opposed to them. So they should know that absolutely, but God not only makes it obvious in His actions, but He always instructs and warns as well. So for their sins, hardship will come…especially towards the wealth that they have misused.

  3. The nations against Israel to be judged. Guilty! Might have been rewarding at the time but the wrath of God awaits them. Not only years ago but still true today. These verses sounds like Gods judgement on those nations. Past present and definitely revelation ch 20

  4. God only had a relationship with Israel….and so he will parent them.

    “You only have I known of all the families of the earth;
    Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.”

  5. Because Israel was God’s chosen people, and they knew the right way to live, they were judged according to a higher standard. Therefore, God would punish them for their sins as a means to correct their bad behavior. He does this because of his love for them.
