Reading along with us in 1 Kings and Acts? Here’s today’s reading:

Acts 13 (NIV)

1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”……Continue Reading

  1. A couple of things stand out to me reading this. First, Paul again uses a history lesson to teach the people. We often say “don’t let your past define you” or “leave your past behind you” and while I believe those statements it is clear that we don’t forget. We need to remember both the good and the bad. The mistakes we have made and the great things God has done.
It was also cool to hear the lineage that we just read about David and how it lead to Jesus. Again your past while maybe filled with troubles can still bring forth great things. I guess I saw the importance of learning from mistakes not just forgetting about them and remmebering the countless times god has rescued me and hom important it is for my kids to hear that and hopefully they will continue to share God’s vistories in their lives for generations to come.

  2. Acts 13

It is interesting to see Paul and Barnabus ordained as early “missionaries” and sent out from the church at Antioch.

  3. Barnabas and Paul were sent out from the believers in Antioch as missionaries to preach Jesus in other cities. They took John Mark with them as a helper. They traveled and preached in some cities when John Mark decided to go home to Antioch. We don’t know what happened between them all besides what the scripture tells us but later we find out that Paul didn’t want him to rejoin them later. Perhaps he just missed his home and couldn’t handle not being around his family. Perhaps he had to mature more in the Lord before he could fully be used of the Lord. Much later Paul is actually requesting for John Mark to join him. Something changed. Barnabas never gave up on John Mark. This is the same John Mark that wrote the book of Mark. As Barnabas never gave up on John Mark so should we be always grateful that the Lord never gives up on us. Just something to remember when we read that John Mark left Barnabas and Paul and went home. It should also teach us that there is always hope for others even when they seem to grow slowly in the Lord. Each person has their growth rate in the Lord. But there should be growth for if someone isn’t growing in the Lord he is falling back. We need to help each other in love as we grow in Him. God bless.

  4. I Like verses 37-39 {But He, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins. And by Him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.} Only Jesus blood can take away our sins. Thank you Lord, for doing this for me and all of us.

  5. So much in this chapter. Paul gives a history lesson to connect all that the Jews know to Jesus, yet they still reject Him. I am currently working on Romans 9 for our women’s bible study and Paul does much the same thing, using history to explain how Jesus is the messiah.

  6. “ I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.
When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. The word of the Lord spread through the whole region.” This is what happens when people share the gospel with truth, love and action. And this is how the Word increases the numbers of believers so that others can be saved. Thank God for the first Christians who risked their lives to tell others about Christ Jesus and make a way for all of us to receive the gift of salvation.
