Reading along with us in 1 Kings? Here’s today’s reading:
1 Kings 4 (NIV)
Solomon’s Officials and Governors
1 So King Solomon ruled over all Israel. 2 And these were his chief officials:
Azariah son of Zadok—the priest;
3 Elihoreph and Ahijah, sons of Shisha—secretaries;
Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud—recorder;
4 Benaiah son of Jehoiada—commander in chief;
Zadok and Abiathar—priests;
5Azariah son of Nathan—in charge of the district governors;
29God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.
This chapter reflects the government and officials of Solomon and how blessed things were in this time as God was providing Solomon with the needed wisdom to rule well.
“But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Human beings cannot live on bread alone.’””

Continuing my reading in Luke Chapters 3 and 4 I wanted to share one of my favorite verses in all the Gospels. When we think about it, “bread” really can apply to anything that is in the sense earthly. In this statement I think Jesus inadvertently is saying there is nothing we can have here on earth as humans that God couldn’t provide unlimitedly in his kingdom. This verse personally always stuck with me and motivates me to have a stronger relationship with the Lord.
1 Kings: 2-4
1 Kings 4
1st Kings 1-4
1 Kings 4
Peace in Israel and Judah.
“And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, each man under his vine and his fig tree, from Dan as far as Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.”
“And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore. 30 Thus Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt.”
God is faithful to His promise and grants Solomon wisdom that is notable amongst the Jews as well as surrounding nations. And so Israel experiences the peace and prosperity that comes with it. May we also experience the same as we seek and apply God’s wisdom to our lives. Solomon also does well as any leader should to assign tasks and delegate responsibilities and authority. And all to God’s glory that Solomon knows all that he does. It is interesting that he is even compared to other apparently wise people of his day and has understanding of all things relational, spiritual and natural. The key for all of us when our giftedness is recognized is to stay humble!!!
