Reading along with us in Esther and 2 Peter? Here’s today’s reading:
Esther 1 (NIV)
Queen Vashti Deposed
1 This is what happened during the time of Xerxes, the Xerxes who ruled over 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush: 2 At that time King Xerxes reigned from his royal throne in the citadel of Susa, 3 and in the third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his nobles and officials.…..Continue Reading

Something I love about Scripture and something that validates it, is its use of historical material and its accuracy in it. We get insight into the way the Medes and the Persians acted as well, and certainly having women in the right place was something many ancient civilizations practiced. What is done here might not be considered right in terms of modern standards, but very much reflective of that time. But Scripture calls husbands to love their wives and wives to respect their husbands and that is the balance that solves the age-old battle of the sexes. May we find wisdom and benefit from the order that God has established.

Queen Vashti had no idea how impactful her words were going to be when she said “no” to the king. It not only changed the course of her life, but it affected the women in the provinces of King Xerxes and then the lives the Jews. Let us think carefully before we speak words that will blatantly offend those who are in authority.
Ester 1
Esther 1
It is interesting to think that even the pagan world had established God-given order as prescribed in Genesis. Even minus a hierarchical system, husband and wife in a unified relationship, and one dishonoring the other translating to the breakdown of the family and society. Kind of what we see now, men and women being unfaithful to their roles, yes, both, leading to a breakdown of society.
1 Peter 5
Nehemiah 13
Esther 1
It does seem that something as simple as saying yes I will come see my husband had such extreme results for all women. In marriages women want to feel loved and men want to feel respected and this refusal to come see the king, her husband, made him feel disrespected. Now he certainly had an extreme reaction but it is a glimpse of how easily marriage breaks down and how when we are out of balance the results are so damaging
