1 Peter 5 (NIV)

To the Elders and the Flock
1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away..............Continue Reading

  1. God wants us to lead by example and good naturedness. Not to be tyrants and bossy. What a reward for us that obey it says we will live in everlasting glory. He wants young people in the faith to follow the elders. And to serve each other with humble spirits. God will give us special blessings. He will lift us up! We are to give ALL our worries and cares as he is always concerned about us.
Stand firm when Satan attacks. He is always creeping around. It is the dame for all of us. The best part is he will come “personally” and pick us up firmly in place and we will be stronger than ever! YES!

  2. After a discussion of instructions by Peter to deal with suffering; such as using our gifts to serve others, being good stewards, and serving others using God’s power. In Chapter 5, I believe Peter gets to the central point that makes it all the work of God – humility. Humility in leadership and humility in all those being lead makes everything work to the advantage of both groups. “God shows favor to the humble.” See Philippians 2.

  3. Interesting chapter about elders. I am humbly and completely honored to serve in a leadership position at living hope Christian church. I consider myself no better in anyway that all that attend. If it’s Gods will that I serve in this capacity I am so blessed. I am content being a child of God and to live for him in whatever he has chosen for me. Casting all our anxieties on him because his love for us is unmeasurable. Who says that!! Give me all your worries snd anxiety. Continue to learn not to submit to my circumstances but to him who controls my circumstances. Satan as a lion is a great comparison. Satan looks for those that are alone. Young. Or weak. Or sick. Love verse 10. Great promise. Has gotten me through some tough times. As this verse gave me hope. Glad there’s a second letter. Want to hear more and be blessed from Peter

  4. 1 Peter 5 – Peter is writing to the elders telling them how to be good leaders in the church, to be an example for Gods people he refers to them as God’s flock. He tells them to be humble and to cast their fears and anxiety on God because he will be the one who cares for us. He tells the elders to be on their guard cause Satan is always trying to get in there and bring them down any chance to destroy he will. Stand for our faith!

  5. The verse about the devil creeping around waiting for someone to devour is a reminder for me to be alert. Some habits and actions are not sinful by themselves, but some of them give way for sins to be committed. I have to say NO to these situations.

  6. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
Wow this!! So true!! We are so blessed at LHCC to have such wise and Godly leadership and it is needed because Satan is not standing back waiting for us to slip up, or worse our kids, but he is actively pursuing them and us. If we forget that we are under attack we may be reminded in the worse way. We must be humble and stay faithful and remember God is in control but learn from our elders when the storms come.

  7. “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.”

  8. I cannot even express my appreciation for the elders and other leaders that have served through the years at LHCC that has been a big part of making us who we are today. They have been living examples of what Peter expresses here, servants who think more of others than themselves and who check their pride and own agendas at the door. And they have all done so willingly and not because they must. And as Peter makes clear here, humility should be the attitude that marks all of us who are in Christ independent of the positions we hold, especially from those younger toward those older. It only makes sense for us to be humble when we consider we are all under the power and authority of our great God, but those who are older have the benefit of wisdom and experience that can hopefully guide the young if they are willing to listen and heed instruction (a big part of humility). But we also can’t miss the great benefit of humility is that God will lift us up in due time….ie His time, His way. And what great comfort there is to cast our cares before a God so powerful and great and know that he cares for us.

Now it is one thing to know and trust Him, but we also must be aware of our enemy, the devil, who prowls around like a roaring lion and he is seeking to devour us. It is important to understand that a lion roaring is a sign of weakness not strength, so the devil is a weakened adversary before God’s power but not before our own. So we need to resist Him and stand firm. And suffering is something that all of us as believers face and their is commiseration and identification in that…that we are not alone in the trials we face. And we share in that burden together…
