Back: Nehemiah 10

Rebuilding the population of Jerusalem I am sure was a challenge. It was a partially rebuilt town that had been virtually vacant for so many years so it could not have been all that appealing but Nehemiah realized the importance of having more people live there for this to really work. You would certainly need the leaders, priests, and existing structures they had reestablished but then any good town needs people so they went to work on bringing people back to Jerusalem, a physical representation of restoration with His people coming back to Him.
People are chosen to occupy Jerusalem so people could be benefitted by what had been done and the city could be protected. It is neat how the Bible identifies the people who left their places outside the city to be there.
