2 chronicles 11:16 don’t rationalise away God‘s teachings in order to gain earthly reward.
How important it is to humble ourselves especially when our pride has been tweaked by people not doing what we want. Rehoboam shows that humility and listens to the guidance of God’s prophet. Rehoboam is also wise to fortify his position not knowing what the Northern kingdom might do against him. And as the Northern kingdom rejects the ways of God, the Levites and godly people in the North flee Jeroboam’s reign and align themselves with Judah. We too should seek godly environments when the influence of evil is strong in places we would otherwise be.

So the Northern kingdom does not follow God but rather chooses idolatry and disobedience. So the Southern kingdom becomes a place for those who still wish to follow God to be together. I was struck that it wasn’t just people who already lived there but rather people from many places found their way there. Much like a church filled with people from all over, coming together to worship and fellowship with other believers.

It is good to have our home base in a place that has a strong faith in God and strives to respond to the Lord’s guidance and direction. Our churches are important places to connect to and serve so that we can stay grounded in our beliefs and be involved in the business of the Lord.
