1. So Rehoboam faces his first big challenge as king and decides to go advice shopping for his answer. Obviously, by not going with the answer from the wise elders from his father’s reign, he was clearly looking to find someone to tell him to do what he already wanted to do. We see this all too often in the world, people seeking the answer they want not the best answer to their problem. As a result of following this bad counsel from his young peers, the kingdom is split. It says “So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken”. God did not cause it to happen, yet simply allowed Rehoboam to make this mistake based on his own sinful heart. Sometimes our best lessons come from God letting us make our worst mistakes!

2. I can only imagine what would have happened if Rehoboam made a good decision and didn’t give into his pride, greed and selfishness. But we do see that God is working behind the scenes here to make things go in this direction. What this refers to is what we saw in I Kings where God tells Jeroboam through a prophet that He is going to give him 10 of the tribes of Israel because Solomon had sought after other gods and rejected the ways and faith of God. I believe that God did not make Rehoboam make this decision but used the naturally proclivities in Rehoboam and didn’t protect him from making a bad decision.

6. Rehaboam asks for advice and chooses to follow the wrong one. God fore knew this.
