Luke 5 (NIV)

Jesus Calls His First Disciples
1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.…..Continue Reading

  1. As I read this today I was struck by Jesus’ dealings with what many would consider hopeless. When the disciples felt like there was no more fish they could catch, Jesus said cast your nets. When a man with leporsy came to Him, He healed him. When the sinners that the priests and the Pharisees deemed outcast, Jesus said I will eat and fellowship with them. Jesus was and is a God that brings hope to the hopeless. The people and the situations we think too far gone, too insurmountable to overcome is where He shines! This is why Jesus came….to do what we could never do on our own!

  2. Mark 5
I am just blown away by all the miracles Jesus performed and everyone witnessed how there could be any doubt In anyone’s mind who he was. So many healing, signs and wonders. We were not there yet we have so much belief faith hope trust within us. The Bible never changes.

  3. I agree Linda, and how amazing it would have been to be there to be struck by Jesus’ presence and miracle like Peter was, and be humbled by it. We can be struck in the same way as we revel in the wonder of all that Jesus did and taught and not become familiar with what we read about Him. And what wisdom Jesus had to address the naysayers and show His ability to forgive sin by telling this man to get up and walk. And Jesus wants to make clear that He is bringing in a whole new way of living under God and it won’t be able to fit in the way that people normally think about things. But Jesus will show that He has a right to define things far more than the Jewish leaders that continually come against Him.

  4. This miraculous fish catch that Jesus does shows us that Jesus was not only concerned about healing the sick and driving out demons, but Jesus cares about our day-to-day routine and myself trying to run a business. Caring for all our needs, our Lord is not only interested in saving us, but helping us in all our daily activities. What an awesome God we serve.. , I love the fact that in verse 13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man . Jesus touches the untouchable. in the end of this chapter talking about pouring new wine into an old wine skin. What a great picture of being stuck in tradition as religion, and not able to change into a relationship full of freedom, peace and joy.

  5. Luke 5 – 31 Jesus answered them and said it is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick .

  6. Pastor Peter talked about freedom yesterday. What a relief it is to have the burden of guilt and condemnation released from our heart, mind and body when Jesus says “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
Jesus came to call sinners to repentance, and he continues to do so to this day. And there will come a time when he calls the righteous to his heavenly home. Until that day, let us live our lives as stated in Matthew 5:16… “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

  7. “But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.””
    ‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭22‬-‭24‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

For Jesus saying “rise up and walk” or saying “your sins are forgiven” are both affirmations of who He is. He’s chooses to say, “your sins are forgiven to demonstrate His authority to forgive sins on earth. Ultimately, His death on the cross shows that it was much, much more difficult for Him to forgive, to make atonement for sins.
