2 Chronicles 28 (NIV)

Ahaz King of Judah
1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord2 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel and also made idols for worshiping the Baals.  3He burned sacrifices in the Valley of Ben Hinnom and sacrificed his children in the fire, engaging in the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 4 He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree...........Continue Reading

  1. How disappointing to be back to such a horrible king like Ahaz! The things he did were detestable and God certainly did not show any favor on Judah during his reign. But even more sad that the worse things got the worse he got! Tearing down anything left that was of God and closing the temple!
What was funny was that the leaders of Ephraim payed more attention to God when Oded the prophet told them that they had gone too far. They immediately tried to fix the things they had done while Ahaz just made things worse.
Sad that many of us when things are going wrong just spiral out of control like this instead of dropping to our knees asking for forgiveness and God’s help to get us back on track….story of the world I guess 🙁

  2. I guess sometimes the apple does fall far from the tree. Who knows what kind of father Jotham was, but He reigned in righteousness and did what was pleasing to God. It just goes to show that in spite of the example set by a parent, kids can stray away to the most vile things. (We will see the exact opposite dynamic with Ahaz and Hezekiah.) Something has got to be wrong with a system of religion that requires you to burn your children. Maybe that should have been the first indication something was off. Or maybe the constant defeat in battle…or maybe being plundered and misused by those more powerful than you. Ahaz shows the true depth of depravity and deception when after all the bad happens he gets worse and discourages the true worship of God and encourages worship of false gods. In some ways it is reflective of the human heart that is in each one of us, deceptive and beyond cure. But for the grace of God, the power of the Word and the Spirit, there go I.

  3. Ahaz goes deeper and deeper into depravity. He even asks Assyria for help and they decline, even when offered gifts.

“For the Lord brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had encouraged moral decline in Judah and had been continually unfaithful to the Lord.”
