2 Chronicles 29 (NIV)

Hezekiah Purifies the Temple
1 Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah. 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David had done.
3 In the first month of the first year of his reign, he opened the doors of the temple of the Lord and repaired them. 4 He brought in the priests and the Levites, assembled them in the square on the east side 5 and said:...........Continue Reading

  1. Hezekiah shows up on the scene and calls the people to get their acts together! Things have been a mess and he knows they have to change their ways. It wasn’t enough for him to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord if the people are not following his example. I love the idea of a leader that “gets his hands dirty” he is involved and motivates the people to do the same unlike king Jotham who’s people were still corrupt in their hearts.

  2. As disheartening as it is to see a bad apple fall from a good tree, it is encouraging to see a good apple fall from a bad tree. Hezekiah’s efforts here are even more impressive in reference to the great evil that Ahaz perpetrated. He makes quick work of it as well showing the strength of his conviction to make it right. In his first month he gets things moving in a right direction. He makes sure he gets the Levites involved because they are the ones to get the temple ready. It was interesting to see that the priests were not as quick to get themselves consecrated. It is interesting to consider whether that was because they had been corrupted in the time of Ahaz or because they wanted to see if Hezekiah was the real deal. And he shows that he is and the Levites complete the task quickly showing their enthusiasm. What a breath of fresh air Hezekiah must have been for those in Judah that remained faithful to God in spite of Ahaz. I imagine they are the most excited and vocal of those assembled to see and bring sacrifices. How glorious it must have been to hear the peoples voices resound as the Levites lead in worship. Ah to be a fly on the wall to hear worship that comes from repentance and restoration. What a great passage of Scripture to read!

  3. Hezekiah does what is right in the eyes of the Lord. He cleans out the temple and restores worship. He gets all of the people involved and uses the appropriate people, the Levites, to do the tasks God laid out for them.

I was thinking of how we see God work now in the time of Christ. You may have someone who comes from a very sinful background, come to the Lord and totally change their ways. Then you might have someone who is “good” that totally rejects the Lord. Hezekiah had an evil father, yet, he came to the Lord and was faithful.
