Reading along with us in 2 Chronicles? Here’s today’s reading:

2 Chronicles 19 (NIV)

1 When Jehoshaphat king of Judah returned safely to his palace in Jerusalem, 2 Jehu the seer, the son of Hanani, went out to meet him and said to the king, “Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord? Because of this, the wrath of the Lord is on you. 3 There is, however, some good in you, for you have rid the land of the Asherah poles and have set your heart on seeking God.”
Jehoshaphat Appoints Judges
4 Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and he went out again among the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim and turned them back to the Lord, the God of their ancestors..........Continue Reading

  1. Jehoshaphat was spared by the God in battle when he should have been killed. He called out to God and God did respond and keep him safe but Jehoshaphat did still align himself with Ahab someone who clearly did not love God. God was sure to let Jehoshaphat know that and gave him a chance to clean up the places in the kingdom where this was evident.
It is one thing to be kind and love all people and it is something different to tolerate, accept, and even participate in behaviors you know are contrary to the things of God. We are called to love people but distinctly also called to hate evil.

  2. Even though the Lord was not totally pleased with Jehoshaphat he had him appt. Judges across the nations and told them. Be afraid to give any other decision than what God gives you. No playing favorites or taking bribes. In Jerusalem he told the Judges to always act in fear of God with honest hearts. He pointed a high priest to help judges on final appeals. Look for only truth and honestly. God will use you to defend the innocent. Notice how in today’s society how hard they try to take God out of the courts as well as everything else.

  3. I’m in Roman’s chapter 4 today. Who better to prove his point of righteousness through faith then Abraham. Considered the father of all Hebrews. Stating that Abraham was considered righteous before God before circumcision was introduced. Religious ceremonies: I suppose are to remind us of our faith in God, but have no power within themselves. Growing up catholic, I was told if I went through the 7 sacraments I had a fair shot at going to heaven. Baptism as an infant. First communion. Confirmation. Marriage. The last rites. And the holy order. I know a lot of Catholics that have gone through most of these and they care nothing about God. They are meaningless without faith!!

  4. What should have been clear to Jehoshaphat from the beginning is made clear from the prophet Jehu..why are you aligning yourself with people who are against God? We should always avoid being unequally yoked. It is one thing to influence those that are evil, it is another thing to link your life with them. But then Jehoshaphat does the most important thing we can do: takes his lumps and consequences from God….but then does what God wants. How many of us would say, your going to put your wrath on me…well fine…I’m going to do my own thing. But that is not Jehoshaphat here….let me appoint judges to make wise and godly decisions for the people. The judicial function is a necessary one in any society and how important it is for all judges to be just, impartial and not be subject to bribery. We can only hope that that is how our courts operate as well….but as we forsake God, we should not be too surprised if His standards go out the window as well…

  5. “Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord? Therefore the wrath of the Lord is upon you.”

Sometimes I wonder if we as Christians allow the enemy to use our kindness against us. When we do not approve of certain behaviors, we are called “haters” or “bigots”. We don’t want to be called that, so we apologize and don’t stand up for what is truly right.

I think our government has been infiltrated, and now even the command to “obey government” may be aligning us, unwittingly, with the enemy. They use our own desire to do right and good against us.
