2 Chronicles 10 (NIV)

Israel Rebels Against Rehoboam
1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. 3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: 4“Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”.........Continue Reading

  1. The people asked Solomon’s son to lightened the yoke around them but he listened to the younger men instead of the elders and increased the yoke and used scorpions as punishment. The Israelites ended up stoning Adoniram. And Reboboam escaped to Jerusalem. It says even today Israel rebels the house of David.

  2. I don’t get this part, people of Israel saying that king Solomon put a heavy yoke on the people. I thought Solomon was wise and ruled the people with wisdom, now his son is saying I’ll rule you more harshly than my father ???

    1. Steve, I believe this is in reference to the work the people did making the temple and other buildings Solomon constructed as well as the taxes he must have put on them. Previous passages pointed to how much provisions Solomon required to run the palace as well as the wealth Solomon accumulated. It might have made sense under Solomon, but the Northern tribes now wanted a break.

  3. Rehoboam shops around for advice the same way many of us do….getting several opinions before we come to our own decision. Hopefully we shop better than he did and stick to the wise counsel but instead he followed the advice of the younger less experienced men and it certainly does not work out in his favor! So sad to see how quickly we can destroy so much hard work when we stray away from God….
15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.
So God allowed Rehoboam to use his free will and make this decision and knew it would unfortunately lead him down this path.

  4. Rehoboam listens to the advice of the young rather than the older advisers that served his father. The people of Israel rebel.

It says, “So the king did not listen to the people; for the turn of events was from God, that the Lord might fulfill His word, which He had spoken by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.”

So, one wonders, was Solomon a harsh ruler? He did do as Samuel told the people when they asked for a king, that they would serve the king and he would take their sons and daughters and put them to work.

When it says that the turn of events was “from God” does that mean it was His intent, or was it prophesied because God knew the heart of Rehoboam and the hearts of the people and where it would lead? Probably, “yes.”

    1. I think it was God making a provision for the Northern tribes as He knew the direction Rehoboam would go in this interaction…I believe it is in 1 Kings that we see the great promise God gives to Jeroboam if he will only be faithful. It is once again an exercise in God granting free will. He allows Rehoboam to make this bad chose (and not protecting him from it) and then gives Jeroboam great promises for his leadership and lineage, knowing full well that Jeroboam will be evil and lead the people of Israel astray from the get go.

  5. It is important for us to consider what counsel we follow as well as when it is appropriate to please people and not please people. Rehoboam shows none of the wisdom his father had and thinks pridefully and selfishly. The young men were telling him what he wanted to hear…they were likeminded in there perception. How important it is to be open to other ideas especially when those other ideas are promoting the things of God and concern for others above self.

And this division between the tribe of Judah and the other tribes doesn’t start here…there are indications of it earlier in scripture as well….
