1 Kings 1 (NIV)

Adonijah Sets Himself Up as King
1 When King David was very old, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. 2 So his attendants said to him, “Let us look for a young virgin to serve the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm.”……Continue Reading

  1. How important it is for anyone in leadership to designate their successor when the time comes. And in this David failed to address Adonijah which gave him sway to declare himself king and confuse significant individuals to follow him. But knowing it was God’s will for Solomon to be king, it is not surprising that Nathan the prophet sets the wheels in motion for that to happen. And it is not surprising once God’s choice is identified that things for Adonijah and those with him fall apart. And Adonijah is wise not to cling to his pride, but to cling to the altar in humility and make clear to Solomon that he is ready to accept his kingship. Solomon also shows wisdom to tell Adonijah, that if he does right, he will be ok, but he will deal him him harshly if he doesn’t.

I will be following along in the readings while I am on vacation, but will not be able to post. May more people see the value of joining us here as we engage with the word of God together.

  2. It’s crazy how Adonijah tried to trick everyone
he knew he was not the one who was supposed to take King David’s place and it did not go well for him and everyone that followed him. It did not end well for them and everyone that stayed loyal to king David were rewarded well thanks to Nathan and Bathsheba telling King David all that Adonijah had done. Adonijah’s plans were ended and Solomon took his rightful place as King. If only Adonijah had sought after Gods will first and humbled himself to do the right thing things would not have ended so terribly for him and everyone who followed him. If only we could ask God for his direction and help in times of need also. easier said than done, when all we see sometimes is what we want or think we want . Thank you Lord for your word, and if we can stay in your word and ask God for his direction and will , we can stay on the road that leads to everlasting life and eternal peace With Jesus, Amen .

  3. 1 Kings 1
How slyly Adonijah managed his intent to be king. But Nathan knew better and made sure that King David’s wish for Solomon was fulfilled. So we need to learn to plan ahead while we’re able and not leave important decisions to chance.

  4. Adonijah act presumptuously. Power, control, and fear can make us react in our own interests. I think of so many situations where we excuse presumptive actions because of fear. I was wondering what seizing the horns of the altar meant so I looked it up on enduring word:
    a. Took hold of the horns of the altar: According to almost universal custom in the ancient world, a religious altar was a place of sanctuary against justice or vengeance. An accused man might find safety if he could flee to an altar before he was apprehended. This is why Adonijah took hold of the horns of the altar.

The appropriate response, adonijah clings to the altar God and demonstrates humility.

  5. As great a king as David was, he certainly had many shortcomings as a father. His sons would show poor judgment or sin and David never seemed to do enough to set them straight. Here we see another side effect of that in Adonijah thinking he could just declare himself as king in his father’s failing health. He did not seek God, he did not consult his father, he just declared himself king.
Luckily, Nathan and Bathsheeba were able to get David to take action and restore God’s will to the situation and no surprise that Adonijah ends up very humbled after this misstep!
