1 Kings 1 (NIV)

Adonijah Sets Himself Up as King
1 When King David was very old, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. 2 So his attendants said to him, “Let us look for a young virgin to serve the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm.”

  1. Adonijah tries to usurp the throne from ailing David AND Solomon who David intends to reign after him. Not sure what Joab and the other priests were thinking to go along with him.

  2. How presumptuous of Adonijah to just make himself king and not surprisingly those closest to David did not get invited to the big party. A reminder that David didn’t do such a great job raising his sons.

  3. Once again David’s poor parenting leads to trouble. How we need to speak into our children’s lives to direct them and let them know our thoughts. For David not to have clearly communicated what he and God’s intent was for who would succeed him as king was a grave oversight. Now Adonijah seeks to fill the apparent gap that exists and gets others involved in what is clearly not of God. It is telling that there is no reference to Him being consulted in what is happening in the beginning of the chapter.

But for what David lacked in what he did not communicate in the past that lead to this confusion, once he is informed, he does spring to action to clarify what he had left unclear. It is important for leaders to spring to action and make sure what is right is done. So he puts the wheels in motion to have Solomon to succeed him as king and he makes sure all the right people are involved. Once what is right and God’s will is put in place, it is good that everyone falls in line. Solomon shows his wisdom in dealing with Adonijah: you will be fine in my kingdom if you show yourself good, but if your plan is to do evil, then you will die.
