Reading along with us in 1 John? Here’s today’s reading:
1 John 3 (NIV)
1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
1 John 3
10This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.
The idea that God would call me His child is just so overwhelming! The love, forgiveness, and mercy He shows us is so unconditional. I think about myself as a parent and how much I love my children and still it can not compare to how He loves me. How can we not in return keep His commands and share that love with others.
How true it is that God’s love for us expressed in us being made His children is priceless!!! As we become one of His children, we become something different. His life is now in us and that life seeks to produce righteousness. As we live to Him, through Him and for Him, we will not continue to sin because it should be inconsistent with our nature. And an inherent part of Christ’s nature reflected through us will be how we love one another. God is love and the same love that He expresses to us should be expressed to others, especially those who are also part of the family of God.
For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,
