1 John 2 (NIV)

1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

  1. This chapter talks about the antichrist and how several have already come and more will come in the end days. It talks about the antichrist being anyone who does not believe in and speaks against God and by that definition there are so many that will speak against God both subtly and deceptively and others that are more blatant. So important that we trust in God and stand strong in His truths to not fall prey to those who will try to lead us astray

  2. Forgiveness, obedience, loving each other, knowing God and overcoming the world are emphasized in this chapter. It is a sobering and true thought taught by Jesus as well, that if we know and love Him then we will follow His commands. The Bible never describes the Christian life as believing something without then doing something, rather our actions show our faith. Faith in Christ is the only requirement for salvation, but it is a faith that transforms. And as John says here, it is a good way for us to know that we believe. But living that faith in the world is not easy. Temptation is all around but the flesh is only as powerful as we allow it. The influence of antichrist has always been around, and will only grow as the end unfolds. And yet, in Christ we have power to overcome the world. We do not need to be ignorant of the devices of evil and we have power to overcome the evil that is inside us also. May we allow the transformation that God desires to happen to us through our knowledge and identification with Christ happen.

  3. “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”

Doesn’t this refute the Calvinist doctrine of limited atonement?

I am falling behind in our online reading because we have a toddler in our house! Can’t take my eyes off him for a second!
