1 Chronicles 5 & 6 (NIV)

Reuben
1 The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father’s marriage bed, his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel; so he could not be listed in the genealogical record in accordance with his birthright, 2 and though Judah was the strongest of his brothers and a ruler came from him, the rights of the firstborn belonged to Joseph)— 3 the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel:

  1. These chapters held many more details of what some of these tribes and groups accomplished or things they were responsible for. Again I kept thinking these chapters are like Biblical Google searches for the people. To see where they have come from and what they can accredit to their family sometimes good and bad :))

  2. Chronicles 3 & 4 I hope there’s never a quiz on all of these names and clans and tribes, because I would fail. Like Kelly commented if you need to know where they came from and what they or didn’t accomplish it’s all right there.

    1. My goodness Cindy I am never passing that quiz! and it made me think of the endless list of missed opportunities for naming my kids LOL

  3. Reuben is noted for his disregard for God’s ways and yet later in life, the tribe he leads calls out to God for help in battle and God honors that. We can be glad we have a God who always provides a way for recovery. And it was interesting to read the detail given about the tribe of Levi. It is important to remember that they were not given an inheritance like the other tribes because they were Israel’s tithe to God to His service. Therefore the tribes were told to a lot cities for the Levites to have. It makes the property designations here very important. We can also remember that each of the sons of Levi were given certain responsibilities for the items of the tabernacle. It’s another reason why this lists are given and sometimes even repeated to emphasize their significance.

  4. It is mentioned that a ruler comes from Judah, “Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came a ruler” fulfilling the prophesy from Genesis. “The scepter shall not depart from Judah,”

The prophesy of Reuben from Genesis is mentioned here too.

It’s interesting that David chose many men “over the service of song in the house of the Lord.” It seems that once upon a time it was people of God who excelled in the arts. I think the downfall of many modern Christian artists is their desire to mimic the world’s art with their art, OR their desire to make their art purely for a Christian audience. Christian music and movies, etc are seen as cheesy and poorly produced. Maybe that is the world’s review, but I think many Christians feel that way too. Many Christians think that music must have Christian words or a scripture on a painting for it to be good or “Christian”. I have had many occasions where I have done a painting and had someone tell me it would be beautiful with a scripture verse over it. I confess, I groaned inwardly. I appreciate musicians and artists who are “Christians who make music and art”, not “people who make Christian art and music.” Art can move the spirit in a person inspired by the Holy Spirit without words.
