The Sons of David
1 These were the sons of David born to him in Hebron:
The firstborn was Amnon the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel;
the second, Daniel the son of Abigail of Carmel;
2 the third, Absalom the son of Maakah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;
the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;
3 the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
and the sixth, Ithream, by his wife Eglah.

  1. It is interesting that the familiarity with David’s family makes reading their lineage a bit more engaging. It speaks to the fact that these lists were far more important when they were written and to the people familiar with or impacted by them. Jabez’s prayer is notable mainly because of the book written about it. It is interesting that he is not in any family list than just pops out as one who was more honorable than his brothers and so God made note of his prayer. Certainly it is a prayer that we can pray as well, but there are also far better ones in Scripture to model.

  2. Even though this seems like a list of names, there are some very interesting tidbits of information given.

    I went to visit my dad this past weekend (86 years old). He is very much into genealogy and tells many family stories. He has written many of them down and has told the stories so often that my brother and I can easily associate their name with specific events. Makes me think of how important it is to know God’s word and why He used stories, history and parables to help us remember all that He has done for us.
