  1. While I do not gleam much personally from these lineage chapters it is important to remember the families and the tribes and how God orchestrates things so perfectly through people. How one man in a family makes choices that effect generations to come and then when we read about these people and see their names come up in these lists it is a cool moment to think oh that’s right they were part of that same line of people.

  2. Although a little boring to read, how important lists like this are to establish the word of God in the context of human history. God moves in the context of relationship and observes and intervenes in human history. Therefore the Bible is not a fantasy book, but a book of the history of humankind and God’s interaction with it. And people throughout history have followed Him and rejected Him. And yet God still delineates their place in history. The added descriptions are interesting and it is telling that woman are mentions periodically. It is a way for God to validate their place in history as well. So there is more here than meets the eye……

  3. Yes, a little boring, but I see familiar names and it reminds me of their detailed history written in other books and reminds me that these are real people and events.

  4. The chronicler (who wrote this?) chose to remind of us of seemingly random information about certain individuals:
-Er, the firstborn of Judah, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; so He killed him.
-The son of Carmi was Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the accursed thing.
-Now their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. (sisters, we don’t usually hear about sisters.)
-Now afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was sixty years old; and she bore him Segub. (Why is the sex act described here? Rather than just saying he married her and had children?)
    -Jether died without children.
-Now Sheshan had no sons, only daughters. And Sheshan had an Egyptian servant whose name was Jarha. 35 Sheshan gave his daughter to Jarha his servant as wife, and she bore him Attai.

A major point I glean from these genealogies is that God values children! His “be fruitful and multiply” is important to Him! The earth is NOT overpopulated and man’s pro-creation is not causing global warming! Satan has a plan and if you want to know what it is, it is the exact opposite of God’s plan cloaked in propaganda.
