  1. Just to clarify for myself I looked up and found out that the gatekeepers had the responsibility for security, both in a practical and spiritual sense. They made sure that only those who were ready to serve and worship God could come to the temple and its associated building.
It seemed that there was a practical and spiritual nature to what they did and while God looked at it ALL as important I am sure as men we made distinctions so it was wise of David to keep the dividing of theses tasks up to God and not by earthly stature or position.

  2. Listing of more families and their responsibilities.
    Porters.
Keeper of treasury of the house of God.
    strong men, able for service.

Maybe I am misunderstanding, but was it that tribes were competing for the positions to serve and that is why they cast lots?

“Among these were the divisions of the porters, even among the chief men, having wards one against another, to minister in the house of the Lord.” So they cast lots…..

  3. Organization and making responsibilities clear were and are important to God. There was so much involved in the running of the temple and the kingdom that various positions had to be filled and managed. And the casting of lots could have been just the way positions were filled so there was no appearance of favoritism or as a means to seek God’s hand in choosing where people served. And God’s concern over it is shown in it’s being documented and communicated here.

I do appreciate Obed Edom being mentioned here. He is the one whose home the Arc was placed in after the guy died when David had it carried by a cart rather then the Levites. God certainly blessed him at that time as well as moving forward as we see here.
