  1. How important wisdom is to know what course to take when confronting things. If Hanna knew David’s character, he would know not to trust the advice given, and it is the strength of a leader to turn aside bad counsel. And even if they distrusted David, he didn’t need to dishonor his emissaries. And even after dishonoring them, why not try to say your sorry and compensate the men for what they had done? How unwise it was to marshal an army against David when God’s hand had so clearly been with him. And so God grants David victory but I bet Hunan wished he took the course that wisdom would have revealed if they assessed the matter correctly.

  2. This is certainly a chapter in bad decision making from the Ammonites and, as bad decision making usually does, it didn’t end well for them. There was no reason to think David was being dishonest or insincere, however, as we see all too often someone gets in someone’s ear and poor counsel leads to bad decisions like this.

  3. If David was friends with Nahash, Hanun was foolish to assume David had ill intent towards him.

I suppose there is much deceit and subterfuge with rulers, and nations in warfare. There is a balance in diplomacy and discernment. Hanun’s response to David’s overtures could have been guarded, but instead he responded to compassion with an insult.
