1 Chronicles 19 (NIV)

David Defeats the Ammonites
1 In the course of time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son succeeded him as king. David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.

When David’s envoys came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him, the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?”..........Continue Reading

  1. People do strange things and this chapter starts with these commanders stirring up trouble. Maybe they really did feel like David had bad intentions in sending sympathy, however, David had given them no reason to think that and ultimately their hasty behavior in humiliating these men starts a war.
I did think it was funny to see armies flee before battles even began. There must have been something about warriors with God on their side that looked and felt different to the opponents. We should look differently when we enter a situation…people should be able to tell us apart!

  2. Sometimes it is right to be suspicious, especially when it comes to international relations. In this case, the Ammonites would have fared better if they chose to accept David’s diplomatic overtures.

“Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight.”

  3. Insecure people act suspiciously and assign bad motives even to the best of other’s intentions. If Hanun had learned of David from his father, he would have known he could be trusted. And how foolish it was to disgrace them. It is certainly wise for us to be guarded in certain situations but also allow our trust in God to free us to be able to trust people. As the story unfolds, this altercation based in suspicion just leads to a big mess. It is easy for one bad decision to lead to others. How important it is to be humble enough to admit mistakes and find more suitable solutions to problems rather continuing to dig the holes we fall into deeper. It is almost humorous that anyone would come against David after the numerous signs of God’s hand being upon Him. So since they didn’t learn that lesson in the beginning, they learned it in the end. Which is always the way it works with God. It is always better to learn things at the beginning rather than waiting to the end…because some times it ends up being too late….
