1 Chronicles 15 (NIV)

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
1 After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. 2 Then David said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the Lord chose them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister before him forever.”
3 David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord to the place he had prepared for it. 4 He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:........Continue Reading

  1. This time David followed God’s instructions for the transporting of the Ark. He showed the Ark the reverence it was owed. This was something that was important to God and David respected that and obeyed.
Carrying or just being around God’s Ark that held the presence of the Lord must have been such an honor and almost overwhelming feeling I am not surprised at David’s desire to surround it with music and singing and for his reaction to dance so joyfully in its path.
I imagine this brought God such joy a s well and similar to our own worship each Sunday when we usher in His presence and just let go for a few minutes, get lost in the music, in the lyrics of the songs, and just praise and worship Him undistracted by who might be listening or watching!

  2. David gets it right this time and shows his humility by admitting his fault. How important that is when we are in the wrong rather than going out of our way to put ourselves in a more positive light. It is also interesting to read the planning and logistics involved in bringing the Ark to Jerusalem. You can almost see a strategy meeting..ok, you guys do the singing, you guys play the instruments, and you guys will be the door keepers…wait now, who is writing this down?

And how appropriate it is to enthusiastically praise God…..certainly greater than anything else we get enthusiastic about. And what is revealed about Michal’s heart that she despises David for doing so. Let’s not let the naysayers determine how much we value our God!

  3. David recognizes that he didn’t follow the instructions the first time he transported the Ark.
“For because you did not do it the first time, the Lord our God broke out against us, because we did not consult Him about the proper order.”
So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel. 15 And the children of the Levites bore the ark of God on their shoulders, by its poles, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord.”

I had always heard that Michal had despised David because of what he was wearing…the ephod….but it is clear that she is looking with disdain for his dancing. “And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came to the city of David, that Michal, the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing: and she despised him in her heart.” It reminds me that we should not be self-conscious about how we look in worship or how others will perceive us (although we shouldn’t be distracting, calling attention to ourselves), but we should be fully engaged with the Lord in our worship.
