Zechariah 2 (NIV)

A Man With a Measuring Line
1 Then I looked up, and there before me was a man with a measuring line in his hand. 2 I asked, “Where are you going?”
He answered me, “To measure Jerusalem, to find out how wide and how long it is.”
3 While the angel who was speaking to me was leaving, another angel came to meet him 4and said to him: …..Continue Reading

  1. In this third vision Zechariah sees a man measuring Jerusalem only to find that it is to small to accommodate all those God would return to live there in glory. [ Holman Bible Dictionary ] In verse 4 it says that Jerusalem will be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein. God will dwell in the midst of the people and many nations will gathered together and shall be His people. Not just the Jewish people but many peoples from different lands. All to worship the true and living God.

  2. What love and hope is communicated to the post exilic Jews in this chapter. God expresses His heart for Jerusalem and His protection, purpose and identification with it. There will be no physical walls to accommodate all the people the will gather in it, but God will be a wall of fire around it and He will be its glory within! He will also secure them from their enemies because they are the apple of His eye. Whoever messes with you really messes with Me, God is saying, because you are so dear to me. And if all this wasn’t enough, God shows that in the end, Jerusalem will be the rallying place for many nations and they too will be His people. God will choose Jerusalem again. What a beautiful picture of the New Jerusalem which will be our dwelling place in eternity!

    1. I think the Glorious One is God the Father and the me He is sending is the second angel that came who is speaking the words. If that angel is the angel of the Lord, then that could be the second member of the trinity. Not technically Jesus yet, but the One who would enter time as Jesus. But it does get tricky following the pronouns and who they refer to….

  3. This vision is such a wonderful picture of God’s love and protection of His people. He will dwell within and be a wall of fire around them! Just amazing how He loves His people!

  4. “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord. 11 “Many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and they shall become My people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you.”

  5. “For he who touches you touches the apple of his eye.” God protects those he loves, let the people rejoice in this truth. And the Gentile nations will join in praise because they will also be regarded as the Lord’s people. Thank you Jesus for making this possible!
