Psalms 79-80 (NIV)

A psalm of Asaph.
1 O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they have defiled your holy temple,
they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2 They have left the dead bodies of your servants
as food for the birds of the sky,
the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.
3 They have poured out blood like water

  1. 8 Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;
    may your mercy come quickly to meet us,
    for we are in desperate need.
    Well doesn’t that sum up the whole learn from past mistakes! And we are so blessed that He is a loving, merciful, and just God that He provides redemption and forgiveness when we confess our sins and turn away from our old path and follow His.
    We are in desperate need for God as we see over and over not only in these recounts but even today!

  2. How hard it was for the Jews to suffer defeat by their enemies and to have Jerusalem and the temple overrun. I mean God did warn them consistently through His prophets what was coming down the pike, but for the faithful amongst them, these Psalms reflect the cries of their hearts. What a good model they provide for what God wants to hear from us: a venting of our emotions, a desire for answers about what God is doing, and a seeking God to deal with negative circumstances and our enemies. It is also fitting for the Psalmist to ask God to move, act, reveal which will lead to greater faithfulness from His people. But we also must recognize the reality that we should be faithful to God regardless of what we see Him doing or not doing. He is what is true. He is what is reality….not what we are experiencing in our lives….
