I have started reading in 1 Thessalonians and listening to sermons in preparation for our next Women’s Bible Study. I am also reading through Proverbs and trying to post those each day on my Facebook page. I am thinking I will try to do that with another book of the Bible, but not sure what.
It really is foolish to trust anything outside of God for our lives. How foolish were humans to make idols, give them physical features and then worship them like they had some sentience in and of themselves. I love the way the Psalm expresses it here. They have all these physical features but none of them function. It is the worshipper that gives the idol meaning. But not so with our God. He has meaning and is worthy of worship whether anyone worships Him or not. Not to us but to you, Lord, goes all glory and praise. And all this praise and knowledge of God should lead to trusting Him, and then in trusting Him we give Him the opportunity to bless us. But the blessings are not the reason for our trust. God’s very being gives us the reason to trust Him. If He chooses to bestow blessing, that is His prerogative and just gives further reason to praise and trust Him.
1 Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
We may not build literal golden idols any more but this world is a prideful one and even when we do good many times it is for the wrong reason. Even our talents were given by God and should be used to His glory not our own.
9O Israel, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
10O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
11You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
