Reading along with us in some selections in Psalms and Proverbs? Here’s today’s reading:
Proverbs 23 (NIV)
Saying 7
1 When you sit to dine with a ruler,
note well what is before you,
2 and put a knife to your throat
if you are given to gluttony.
3 Do not crave his delicacies,
So much about wisdom and instruction in this chapter as it is the key to avoiding the pitfalls of bad decisions. Even the things that we need can become sinful when not looked at through the instruction God has given. Excess and gluttony happen so easily when we take our eyes off of what is truly important
Proverbs 23
Proverbs 23
Proverbs 22-23
I like this part: “Do not speak to fools, for they will scorn your prudent words.” (I feel affirmed about what I do with certain people on social media, lol)
Reading Proverbs is like eating at a buffet, I can’t chose just one thing, it is all so apropos.
“When you sit down to eat with a ruler,
Consider carefully what is before you;
And put a knife to your throat
If you are a man given to appetite.
Do not desire his delicacies,
For they are deceptive food.”
I couldn’t help but think of the giant spending bill before the Senate…..deceptive food that will cost us.
“Do not let your heart envy sinners,
But be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day;
For surely there is a hereafter,
And your hope will not be cut off.”
We all must decide what we rely on and what we are pursuing in our lives. This Proverb warns against the danger of pursuing wealth, possessions, prestige, stimulants and lust. All of which are at the center of what many in the world are pursuing and temptations abound overtly and subtlely for us to become dependent on them as well. Yet the proverb not only addresses the wrong, but also the right. We should pursue wisdom, truth, and godly counsel. And the result will be a life well lived, beneficial to us and those associated with us (family primarily). Everything else is a trap and a snare….and leads to destruction…..
