Numbers 36 (NIV)

Inheritance of Zelophehad’s Daughters
1 The family heads of the clan of Gilead son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, who were from the clans of the descendants of Joseph, came and spoke before Moses and the leaders, the heads of the Israelite families. 2 They said, “When the Lord commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites by lot, he ordered you to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.........Continue Reading

  1. It is soooo often the case when plans are made that there are subtleties and exceptions to be worked out. How necessary open and honest communication is when that happens when each party is able to represent it’s concerns and they are worked out in compromise or by authority. And it is nice when a decision is made that all parties agree to and it works out favorably.

It also struck me as it has so often in reading the Old Testament how often things are repeated and repeated immediately after something is said. Do you see it here? The daughters have to marry in their tribe and no tribes land is to go to another…oh and by the way, the daughters are to marry within their tribe and no tribes land is to go to another. And this happens a lot in the Hebrew Scriptures. Is it addressing stubbornness, forgetfulness or both. Otherwise it probably didn’t hurt to reenforce the principle so everyone got it right at least in the beginning…..

  2. Numbers 35: repetition helps when addressing resistance. God was so good to explain the subtleties of His command. As they say, the devil’s in the details.

  3. What a journey this was in the book of Numbers. We saw constant direction and instruction from God. I can’t help but think how amazing this time must have been to be so closely cared for and instructed by God. Makes me want to listen more closely in my own daily life because I know He is with us the same way He was with them!

  4. Those daughters of Zelophehad were not afraid to stand up for themselves or for their tribe’s inheritance. I think this demonstrates that “submissive” does not mean weak or passive. I noticed too that it says, “they can marry whom they think best (within their father’s tribe)” so they got to choose their own husbands.

  5. 7No inheritance in Israel is to pass from one tribe to another, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal inheritance of their ancestors. 8Every daughter who inherits land in any Israelite tribe must marry someone in her father’s tribal clan, so that every Israelite will possess the inheritance of their ancestors. 9No inheritance may pass from one tribe to another, for each Israelite tribe is to keep the land it inherits.”
