  1. Not the turnout Balak had hoped for but the expected one when you consistently deny God’s will and disobediently and pridefully comes against Him.

  2. Numbers 24:1 is very revealing of Balaam telling us at times he used divination to get his insights. Although he didn’t do it in this case, we all need to careful not to play both sides of the fence in our Christian walk. It is the oldest trick in the book to have a foot in the ways of God and a foot in the world. We like to think we can make that work and satan and our sin nature are more than willing to oblige and provide all the deception necessary. But it is all lies. We need to resolve in our hearts that God’s ways are always the best ways and forsake the ways of sin, the world and satan.

Now here, Balaam does tell it like it is and all that God can say about the Jews is blessing. That is His plan and desire for them. Understandably Balak is upset by that and tells Balaam he won’t pay. But Balaam stays strong in the statement he said from the beginning…he would only speak what God said regardless of what Balak paid. To be honest, I thought the story played out differently. But God must have known something about Balaam’s heart to tell Him not to go, as well as what the New Testament says about Him. Balaam is also a testament to the grace of God that He would use a person such as him to present His message…..

  3. It is interesting that the Spirit of God comes upon Balaam and he prophesies.

    He prophesies that he sees:
“The utterance of Balaam the son of Beor,
The utterance of the man whose eyes are opened,
The utterance of him who hears the words of God,
Who sees the vision of the Almighty,
Who falls down, with eyes wide open:”

His prophesy of Israel’s future made me think of God’s control of the big picture.
As we consider our world, it is helpful to remember this. The best place for us to be is fallen before Him with our eyes wide open.

  4. 1Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lordto bless Israel, he did not resort to divination as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness. 2When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him 3and he spoke his message:
“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
4the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,
who sees a vision from the Almighty,
who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
