Numbers 17 (NIV)

The Budding of Aaron’s Staff
1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff. 3 On the staff of Levi write Aaron’s name, for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe......Continue Reading

  1. What a cool way God put an end to the grumbling, rebelling, and challenging of Aaron’s priesthood. God could have simply had a couple green leaves sprout from this rod but He went above and beyond all the way to it producing almonds!
Again He shows the Israelites in a tangible way that He is in control and while you hope the realization of their rebellion at the end of the chapter means changed hearts we have seen them acknowledge God’s power before and return right back to grumbling.

  2. I’m still getting over Numbers 16 wow the Lord’s wrath is something, and all these people witnessed it and still complaining.
In 17 after putting the staffs from each tribe into the Tent of Testimony and Moses brought Aaron’s staff out budded, blossomed and it had even produced almonds and the Lord wanted the staff to be left in front of the Testimony as a sign to the people so hopefully the grumbling would come to an end, and these same people were still filled with fear.

  3. How many miracles does it take for these people to believe God and accept the leaders He has chosen? It is interesting to see the lengths God will go to secure leadership. He expects leaders to be and do right and He expects those under authority to respect and follow. Grumbling and complaining goes contrary to that. I also couldn’t help think that Aron is the guy who helped the people make the golden calf. So how gracious is it that God now has His back?

  4. God causes Aaron’s rod to bud, blossom and fruit!

I sometimes wish that God would verify which leaders are with Him, that He will be using for His purposes. It is not always obvious who God will choose to use, especially if we think over the leaders He has used in the past. Cyrus God used even though he didn’t know God. And David was a man after God’s own heart, even though he committed adultery and had a man killed. It’s not always clear who God is specifically working in and through in relation to who we should vote for and support. I do believe He places all leaders in their positions for His purposes.

  5. 8The next day Moses entered the tent and saw that Aaron’s staff, which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds. 9Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the Lord’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff.
10The Lord said to Moses, “Put back Aaron’s staff in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.” 11Moses did just as the Lord commanded him.
