Nehemiah 3 (NIV)
Builders of the Wall
1 Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests went to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and set its doors in place, building as far as the Tower of the Hundred, which they dedicated, and as far as the Tower of Hananel. 2 The men of Jericho built the adjoining section, and Zakkur son of Imri built next to them.…..Continue Reading
Nehemiah 2
Nehemiah 3
What we see in chapter 3 is a detailed listing of the people who helped build the walls. They are the men working side by side building the walls. There is an exception in verse 12 where Shallum is being helped by his daughters. Also in verse 5 the nobles didn`t work along with the others. Also in verses 20,21 it mentions Baruch and others working around the door of the high priest [ Eliashib ] but not the high priest working on the wall. Probably because of his official duties as high priest. It was important to Nehemiah to make a note of the nobles in verse 5 and the daughters in verse 12. The daughters probably because Shallum didn`t have sons. I don`t know. It is never mentioned how the workers on the walls ate. While the men and a few others were working on the walls there was still much work going on in the community. The women were very busy preparing and feeding everyone including the animals, etc. Then there were children which took alot of tender care. The women managed the households with older brothers and sisters helping with the younger children. There were many daily chores still do be done. Also aunts and grandmas. Nothing easy with food preparation back then or for that matter cleaning, or laundry. How would I know this. I have always been interested in history especially the old west and the time period of Jesus Christ. I`ve lived long enough to see the new appliances. I remember as a child that we had a ice box. That you had to buy ice from a place that only made ice. Now as a retired man I have seen first hand how much work is involved in caring for a granddaughter, We always have Ava on weekends and more often than not also on Thursdays and always when she is sick. It is very tiring for both of us but we wouldn`t trade our time with her for nothing. She is a blessing. Of course it means that we don`t get everything done that we planned on but we love her so much. Ladies even though women are not listed here God knows who you are and how much you do. I know this more than I have ever known this before for I was always working away from home like most men are. But God does take notice. And He is the One who really matters. God bless you brothers and sisters in the Lord.
Love to read your insights and personal application, Dennis.
Nehemiah 3
I think this passage clarifies Gods desire for us to work together harmoniously, no matter who we are and respect/honor our leadership who keeps everything coherent and in order. Doing so we glorify God which is ultimately what He wants and expects of us.
Interesting chapter. There are presently eight gates in Jerusalem today. However, one day Ezekiel says there will be twelve gates. One for.each tribe and three each on the north, south, east and west walls.
Attention to detail and keeping track and assigning efforts is an essential part of leadership and Nehemiah is showing his capacity for such here. How great it is for God’s people to come together to do their part and accomplish together what they couldn’t accomplish on their own. How good to have the walls and gates repaired as well to allow Jerusalem to have the protection needed in an environment that was hostile to them.
Nehemiah 3
Such a great chapter to see a picture of God’s people working together in unity to accomplish His work. Reminds me of our recent Summer Celebration and people using their strengths and talents and even those stepping out of their comfort zone to come together to make such an awesome day!
Catching up….read Nehemiah 3. Have to admit, this is one of those tedious “Numbers” chapters that account for names, places, actions, and accomplishments. Not much to it. Boring. So it seems to me today. Haven’t read the other posts.
Our God is the God of detail and pinpoint accuracy. These are the deeds of those who labored for God out of belief in Him. They expended tremendous effort to do God’s will. It is fitting these words stand as a testimony to their faith. Even if our names are never recorded in Scripture, our deeds for God remain as pure as silver and gold. Thanks be to God!
The whole community works to rebuild the city walls and gates and the houses, only the nobles of one tribe are notes as slackers
All sorts of people, temple servants, merchants, goldsmiths, daughters, governors, rulers, and priests worked side by side to repair and restore the wall. Because of their pride, the nobles of Tekoa would not work on the wall under their supervisors as compared to Baruch son of Zabbai who zealously repaired a section. They would not be written in God’s word as a group that helped to build it. May the Lord’s people always be willing to work with their brothers and sisters to achieve goals for their good and for the glory of God.
