Reading along with us in Nahum? Here’s today’s reading:
Nahum 2 (NIV)
Nineveh to Fall
1 An attacker advances against you, Nineveh.
Guard the fortress,
watch the road,
brace yourselves,
marshal all your strength!
2 The Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob
like the splendor of Israel,
though destroyers have laid them waste
Nahum 2 depicts the judgment of God, seemingly first towards Israel, then focused on Ninevah itself. As the church continues to explore Revelation on Saturday mornings, independent of this study, I am keenly aware that God will make everything right in the end of time.
These ancient people were cruel oppressors, and despite God’s mercy, the Ninevites returned to their ways. II Peter 2 reflects God’s perspectives in the church, and applicable to Ninevah in many respects.
I did some internet, historical checks on the fullfilment of Nahum’s prophecies. Nahum was quite accurate, pointing to the truth of Scripture.
It is good for modern man to have a reliable source of eternal truth. -gy
Micah 7
Nahum 1
Nahum is prophesying against Assyria. And to the capital Nineveh. As history repeats its self. Nineveh the city of blood had returned to its wicked ways. How many times do we feel for Gods vengeance and it doesn’t come. This is a perfect example that God will eventually destroy evil. Within 50 years of this prophecy flood destroyed Assyria Chapter 2 the attacker the Babylonian and Medes conquer Nineveh The rest of this chapter explains how Assyria had gained its wealth plundering other nations. Certainly seems like a lot of people are stealing. Cheating lying their way to riches and getting away with it. All things are laid bare before the eyes of God and everyone will have to be given an account to Him
There is hope for Israel but not for Nineveh. Their pride will be humbled and her attacker here is described with a warning to prepare and the revelation that her attacker will be successful. God is in control of the nations and He lifts them up and tears them down. Babylon has His favor because of their treatment of the Jews and Assyria will be defeated because of their treatment of the Jews. Nahum 2:10 is a telling picture of what will happen and how people are effected by it. How sad that they had gotten it right at one point. It just shows how important it is to persevere in those things that are true and godly because it is just that easy to fall away.
God will bring judgment on Nineveh as He is in control of all things, peoples and nations alike. Just like Nineveh we are given chances to repent and turn away from evil but sad to see so many choose the path to destruction. Hard to shake your fists at God when the judgement comes when you weren’t listening to Him in the first place and it led you to the place where Nineveh ended up.
Amen, Kelly!
Nahum prophesies of a mighty army coming against Nineveh.
The Lord is against them.
It is such a shame that people who repented and turned to God are now 150 years latter bringing the wrath of God upon themselves and this time they will be totally destroyed with no one left and their city [ Nineveh ] completely in ruins with nothing left. Nineveh`s destruction took place in 612BC. Nineveh was a massive city with a defensive wall that measured eight miles in circumference and ranged in height from 25 to 60 feet. [ Holman Bible Dictionary ]. Yet Nahum proclaimed that it would be destroyed never to be built again and it wasn`t. With God nothing is impossible. He always does what He wants to do.
This chapter reads like a movie; I can easily visualize the events unfolding. Woe to the people whom the Lord says “I am against you”.
