Matthew 17 (ESV)

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light....Continue Reading

  1. Thinking about the transfiguration, really quite a different phenomenon and largely unexplained

  2. What a great affirmation of what was revealed to Peter earlier! Jesus is in fact the Son of God, and although we are called to believe that by faith, these three apostles have it affirmed by sight. And they live to tell about it!!! Although short sighted in reality, I think we can all understand Peter’s desire to build some places for these people to stay so this experience could last. But it seems as soon as it started, it then ends with little fanfare (although who else wonders what Jesus, Moses and Elijah were taking about!). I think it shows us that Jesus emphasizes coming to Him by faith rather than depending on experience and the fact that He gives these apostles a gag order, only affirms the priority that faith holds in God and Jesus’ economy.

And Jesus’ ministry was all about relieving human suffering and helping people overcome things that they had no capacity to handle on their own. And this truth is seen clearly in the account of this demon possessed boy. Just imagine what it was like for Him to be relieved of his demons. What a clear expression of the reality that Jesus saves both for eternity and the now! And thanks Dan for posting the article. I am thinking the verse is an addition here, but mostly because when Jesus is asked what the issue is He says it is there lack of faith. If the issue was a lack of prayer or fasting, why would Jesus not mention that upfront?

And just in case all this was not enough to convince us of Jesus’ all prevailing power, He shows His ability to have a coin show up in a fishes mouth. It just adds to the list of the kinds of miracles Jesus performs which just affirms He is not faking or is not a one trick pony. He demonstrated His power and authority over all things through the power the Father makes available to Him.

  3. Were the disciples distressed over what Christ needed to suffer? Or because He would not be the
    earthly King of Israel?

22As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, 23and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.
