Mark 11 (NIV)

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’ ”….Continue Reading

  1. Mark moves into the final week of Jesus’ life. So familiar in their content but so significant in terms of what we learn of Jesus as He completes His mission. Jesus knowing what was prophesied about Him and the way He as Messiah would be presented to the people, He asks the disciples to go get a particular donkey. He would ride into the city in humility. It is interesting to consider whether Jesus prearranged this or saw the situation and knew the owner of the donkey would comply. And the people get the point. But right after receiving the praise of people, Jesus guided by truth and not human opinion, defends the temple by throwing out those who were misusing it. Now before this, He curses the fig tree to teach the disciples about the power of faith as well as the importance of bearing fruit rather than just looking good. Now in this last week, Jesus is harassed with attacks and questions because the Jewish leaders are set on killing Him and therefore look to ruin His reputation with the people. But at every turn, He puts them on their heals, showing the wisdom He has as the Son of Man.

  2. Perfect analogy of what Jerusalem had become comparing to a fig tree. Amazing. How you react over and over and one word sticks out. Vs 13. A fig tree in LEAF. On the outside looked full of life but had none. Appearance only. Israel was spiritually barren. How many people claim to have faith without putting it to work. Just like a barren fig tree. The distractions of life. Let’s let our fruit be shown The religious leaders would have been extremely smart if they saw Jesus to not say a word. Trying to trap the Son of God with words. Over and over Jesus made them look very small. I’m being kind

  3. Have faith in God. Ask for anything in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. If you hold anything against anyone forgive them because your Father forgives you your sins. Good reminder about how we are to think when we ask the Lord for something.

  4. The significance of Jesus riding on a donkey is saying, He is coming as king in peace as Saviour. When a king rode on a donkey into town it was to show that he came in peace. However, if a king rode on a horse it was for battle. Latter Jesus will come on a white horse when He returns to earth in the second coming. This will be for judgement. Zechariah 9:9 is this prophesy of Jesus riding on a donkey. In other places Zechariah prophesies of Jesus second coming. God bless.

  5. We can learn a lot from this little fig tree. Jesus was not impressed by its leaves that presented well, He was looking for the fruit. We can walk around saying the right things, doing the right things but if our heart isn’t in the right place it won’t produce fruit in our lives. People will see us saying we are good Christians but will they really find Jesus when they get closer. It is more about humility and putting others first like the amazing example we have in Jesus than just looking good on paper. The world views things from a place of stauts and importance which is why the disciples wondered who was best in His eyes, but God is just looking at our hearts not our position.

  6. Reflecting on this chapter again and reading the responses. Everything said are all good takeaways for the start of my day. As always, the shares are very helpful.

  7. ”And they said to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?”“
    ‭‭Mark‬ ‭11‬:‭28‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

They question Jesus’ authority because He threatens theirs. They don’t want to acknowledge who He is because they will lose their power over the people. He doesn’t question their authority, but points out their hypocrisy.

”Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.“
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭23‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
