Olive Oil and Bread Set Before theLord
1 The Lord said to Moses, 2“Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning continually. 3 Outside the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, Aaron is to tend the lamps before the Lord from evening till morning, continually. 1. God wanted the use of the law to be one of equality and fairness. Same rules apply to all and the punishment fits the crime. We are quick to take words like an “eye for an eye” and translate them into daily life, putting them in a context where God did not intend them to be. Jesus did clarify that this law was not to be used in relation to personal relationship, but rather forgiveness and understanding was to be used when dealing with conflict in our personal relationships. There are consequences for actions but as people we are called to forgive even when underserved, the same way while we were still sinners Christ died for us so that we may be forgiven.

  2. God’s justice system sure looks a bit different than our own, doesn’t it?

So thankful for the clear depictions of God’s position on sin in the Old Testament as it helps make clear our situation as sinners before a righteous and perfect God, and our desperate need for a perfect and righteous Savior!

Thanks and praise and worship be forever to our God for His great mercy and grace shown through His Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior!!!

  3. The lamps that were to continually burn shows that God is a God of light, and the bread shows how all 12 tribes of Israel were represented before Him. And the harsh punishment for blasphemy shows just how serious a crime it is to defame the name of God, but also reveals what was necessary to condition a society from the outside in to revere God in the way that He deserves and the way that would benefit everyone as well. This clear negative example would show all not to go in the direction that he went.

  4. God’s name is to be revered. We have forgotten this in American society and in the church.
Remember when taking the Lord’s name was treated like a bad word and they wouldn’t even do it on TV?
Can we at least stop saying “oh my G__!” Amongst believers?
