  1. Imagine Jesus washing the feet of the disciples! Such a powerful example of humble service, picture of the Son preparing us for the Father, and lesson in obedience! If ever there is a question to how much God wants to see us love and humbly care for one another, this simple act speaks loud and clear to that. Peter’s reaction is not surprising but still Jesus insists as He does for every one of us. Everytime I read this account I wonder what must have been happening in Judas’ spirit to have your feet washed by the man you are about to betray, must have been so conflicting and yet he still went through with the betrayal. God always has a plan to work through us or in spite of us and Judas filled with greed and selfishness played a role in God’s plan.

  2. What a menial and potentially disgusting job the washing of feet would be in that day. Yet Jesus takes it on, showing His willingness to lower Himself to that extent, providing an appropriate model for how we should serve each other. And I think we can all understand Peter’s reaction, considering who Jesus is and what power He has displayed. And yet Jesus uses Peter’s objection to paint a great picture of the distinction between justification and sanctification. Justification keeps us established in relationship with God as our feet get dirty. And yet God makes provision for us to be clean by confessing our sin to Him. And as Jesus indicates that He is going to be betrayed, you can understand why the disciples minds would start racing. And so Jesus lets them know who it is…and Judas’ hypocrisy is shown in him saying, “Is it me?” What a stark difference between the evil in him and the love and goodness in Jesus!

  3. Keeping up. I see God created heaven and earth for mankind to enjoy to the fullest. That was a servant’s heart, to give so much to us. Jesus shows us something hard to grasp, it is far better to serve others, than master over them. Right on, Pastor Pete.

  4. My personal favorite scripture. John 13-17. Jesus showing the true heart of God as his whole desire at this time is to comfort the apostles. Who are arguing who will be the greatest in heaven. In this setting. And he loves till the end.!! Washing their feet. So they will be nice to each other? Or for them to continue his mission after he was gone. To serve God and others with the message of salvation. Every time I read this to wash others feet. I am cut to the bone. I’m still way too self centered.

  5. Jesus wants us to serve one another as if we were washing their feet. It’s a sincere, loving, special kind of care that we would have for people. And he also added an instruction to his act “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
