Lamentations 4 (NIV)

1 How the gold has lost its luster,
the fine gold become dull!
The sacred gems are scattered
at every street corner.

once worth their weight in gold,
are now considered as pots of clay,

  1. I can’t even imagine the darkness of heart and level of desperation that would cause someone to cook their children, but it is just one of the many descriptions given to show how bad things got when Jerusalem fell by being put under siege for a couple of years. All the past benefits, abundance and privilege are gone as the people suffer the discipline of God. He has done what He said He would do and they have only themselves to blame. And yet the nations and the people are in shock that this has happened to God’s people. Their end was supposed to be very different but prophets, priests and kings led the people away from God rather than toward Him. And yet once again in the midst of the sadness and desperation of the suffering there is the promise that the exile will not last forever and the Jews will return to the land. God is faithful in all His ways and we are all wise to recognize that and live like it matters….

  2. Cook their children! Grope through the streets…..such a awful picture of how bad things had got. Pastor I was struck by the same thing at the end, that glimpse that it will end and they will be restored.
It is so painful to punish your children even when you know you must and you know it is deserved but you never stop loving them and this is how God feels about us!
