Lamentations 1 (NIV)

1 How deserted lies the city,
once so full of people!
How like a widow is she,
who once was great among the nations!
She who was queen among the provinces
has now become a slave.
2 Bitterly she weeps at night,
tears are on her cheeks.
Among all her lovers
there is no one to comfort her.
All her friends have betrayed her;

  1. Obviously as the name implies Lamentations is a collection of very sad poems about the destruction of Jerusalem. This chapter did not disappoint in the sad department for sure!
7In the days of her affliction and wandering
    Jerusalem remembers all the treasures
that were hers in days of old.
When her people fell into enemy hands,
there was no one to help her.
    Her enemies looked at her
    and laughed at her destruction.
This struck me as they remember how good things were with God and how bad it got because they ignored Him.

  2. Well just in case we would read about the fall of Jerusalem too lightly, Lamentations reflects on the suffering that happened and the sadness felt over God’s people receiving the discipline of God. You can sense the anguish as you read about how things deteriorated and how there was no comfort in the level of sadness the writer is experiencing, and that might be the saddest part of all. My grown are many and my heart is faint when we have forsaken God and for the Jews here, to have God forsake them as well. So good to know in Christ He will never leave or forsake us….

  3. I have not spent much time in “Lamentations” since I was much younger. The sadness and despair hits much deeper now as an adult.
