Reading along with us in John for Holy Week? Here’s today’s reading:

John 19 (NIV)

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified
1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.
4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.” ..........Continue Reading

  1. Always heartbreaking to read the accounts of how they treated Jesus. The mockery, the pain, and the ultimate murder of an innocent man. Pilate tried so hard to sway the crowd, however, he was necessary to fulfill God’s plan that His son must die for our salvation. Imagine how hard it must have been to have such a heavy role in that plan.
“It is finished” He knew His work was done, all the prophecies confirmed, and our debt was paid….a debt we could never repay!
I do wonder why John didn’t discuss the earthquake, darkness, and torn veil after His death….seems so significant as the reality check to the people of what just happened?

  2. The soldiers that whipped Jesus went way beyond the 40 lashes to the point where Isiah says he was marred beyond recognition. Pharisees. Have some choice words for them but I am a Christian man. We have no king but ceaser! Turns my stomach. One of the greatest answers in all of scripture. You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above! Guarantee Pilate was tormented for days. Hopefully the rest of his life. The crucifixion speaks for itself. The pain and the humiliation is beyond anything I can imagine. And why Jesus did this. Is beyond anything I can fathom. The joy set before him. He is suffering in so much pain and he still is concerned about others as he tells John to take care of his mother. Joseph obviously had died. It is finished. Paid in full! No more religious duties to get rid of sin. Eternity is ours. And we can freely approach our father because of what Jesus did.!!! Hallelujah!!!

  3. How sad to see Jesus suffer so much for no purpose than the brutality of the time and the unjust system and circumstance that swirled around Him. But this was part of what God orchestrated and Jesus was willing to bear it. He never avoided anything, even though He could have. He truly was bruised for our transgressions and by His stripes we are healed. And all this punishment meted out to Him just demonstrates more of His love for us and makes suffering the cross even worse. I do wonder if at any point Jesus just went into shock, mitigating the bodily pain an any level, knowing full well that the spiritual pain was greatest in the placement of our sin on Him and His separation from the Father. Their eternal, perfect fellowship suspended for Jesus to die the death that our sins deserved…and all willingly. And how amazing that the Jews could be party to this travesty of justice and cruel treatment and then be concerned about the bodies staying on the cross for Passover. And how interesting that Jesus died quicker than the criminals so He could carry out one of the requirements of sacrifices. It was also a provision of grace from the Father. Once the work was completed, there was no need for Jesus to suffer anymore.

  4. The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.”

He didn’t break the law. He is God.

  5. John 19: So hard to read and fathom the suffering they put Jesus through and he had the power to stop it at any time, but he knew what he had to do for us he came for us and she’d his blood to show us how much he loved us. He gave us salvation with him, glory with him, eternity with him in heaven.
