John 17 (NIV)

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do...............Continue Reading

  1. Reading Jesus’ prayers is like being an insider on God’s plan and purpose for Jesus, for the disciples, and for us.

    We learn about Jesus:
-The Father will Glorify Jesus to in tern be glorified by Him.
-Jesus has been given Him authority over all flesh authority to give eternal life
-The Father has given certain ones to Jesus.
    – Eternal life defined: to know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
    – Jesus was sent by the Father.
    – Jesus glorified God the Father on the earth.
    – He finished the work the Father gave Him.
    – Jesus was originally glorified with the Father before the world was.
    – Jesus sanctifies Himself that the disciples also may be sanctified by the truth.

    We learn about the Disciples:
    – The disciples were given to Jesus out of the world.
    – They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. The disciples were faithful Jews.
    – They know that all that Jesus has done is from God.
    – They have received all the words of Jesus.
    – They believe God the Father sent Jesus.
    – They are not of the world.
    – If they are Jesus’, they are God’s and Jesus is glorified in them.

    Jesus prays for the disciples:
    – “I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.” Give them a unity in Him.
    – Jesus kept them (except Judas, part of prophesy)
    – Jesus prays that they have His joy fulfilled in them.
    – He prays for their perseverance in the world and that they be kept from the evil one.
    – He prays that they be sanctified by God’s truth.
    – Truth is defined: God’s word is truth.
    – He is sending them in to the world.

Jesus prays for future believers: (just a side-thought, the disciples were faithful Jews that followed Jesus at that time. They were chosen specifically and as I saw in Ephesians, others come to Jesus because they believed.)
    – I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word (it doesn’t speak of these being chosen in these verses, but that these future believers believe based on the word and testimony of the disciples.)
    – Jesus prays for their unity as well. “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” This is a testimony that will be to the world.
    – Jesus is praying for on the glory and unity He has with the Father.
    – Jesus prays for them (us!) that we be with Him, to behold His glory.
    – Jesus prays and declares knowledge of the Father and His name and His love be in us.

  2. The greatest prayer in all of scripture. We get to listen in as Jesus converses with His father. Wow. Jesus’ work is finished on earth. He has performed the miracles, prepared the disciples and his greatest is soon to come: His death and resurrection. Father glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. Let that sink in for awhile. Prays for the disciples, not for those that are in the world. Interesting! Vs 10. And glory has come to me through them. Is that how Jesus sees us today? The name of Jesus. Power in that name. So that they may have the full measure of my joy. Jesus mentions joy 6 times during the last supper. The only way to have that joy is to be intimately connected to Jesus. God’s care and protection is ours even when defeat seems certain. Verse 14 is a reminder that we have an enemy. And as we don’t participate in the sins of the world the world hates us along with satan. Thank You Jesus. You have overcome the world. And everything is under your feet. Jesus prays for us. That we will be one as He and the father are one. And we will have unity. Been through a few church splits. What a turn off for unbelievers to witness. Let’s build each other up. Avoid gossip. Refuse to argue over divine matters. Let’s stay united in the vine and produce good fruit.

  3. What an amazing opportunity to heat Jesus’ prayer for His disciples and for us. Imagine Him taking the time to pray for us. His desire for us to live in unity, to believe in Him, to make disciples for him, and to produce fruit to glorify Him!

  4. A powerful prayer is presented here, said before Jesus’ disciples, to show that He clearly knew who He was, that He cared for them and they would need God’s help in what they would face. Jesus knows that He is God, that the Father is with Him and there is a plan unfolding in what Jesus has and will accomplish. How important this is to know as things will look like they are falling apart soon after Jesus prays this. He also lets the apostles know that He knows that they get who He is and there was a plan surrounding that as well. They have heard and received what He has said and there is power and influence in that, but because He is now leaving, they need prayer and the Father’s intervention. How comforting, assuring and troubling it was for them to hear what Jesus prays for them. How this would be intended by Jesus to be something to reflect on in the days ahead. How it speaks of how God is with whomever follows Him and He is aware of the realities of life and ministry and He is there with the care and resources we need to make His will happen, because we are in the world but not of it.

It is also intriguing to think of what the disciples thought of Jesus praying for those who would be impacted by their message. As He would later give them the great commission, they could know there message would gain followers. And how could you miss Jesus’ heart for unity amongst those who follow Him. To be one as He and the Father are one is the standard, and yet I couldn’t help but reflect on how badly the church has done that through history. May we make sure that we do better!
