Job 5 (NIV)

1“Call if you will, but who will answer you?
To which of the holy ones will you turn?

  1. Eliphaz continues his counsel where he presumes what is going on with Job. He is right to direct Job to look to God and present his case to Him. He even declares great truths about God’s power, sovereignty and work that we all can take to heart. But He concludes his statement focusing on the discipline and correction of God, presuming that that is what Job needs most to hear. But he is right that we should not despise God’s correction and we can be comforted that God will rescue us from the elements of His correction as well. And He will bless us again when we turn ourselves around.

  2. Eliphaz continues his interpretation of what is happening to Job and what he needs to do about it. His counsel is coming from a good place and to seek God in your troubles is good advice. One might argue that Eliphaz, like many of us, is counseling from personal experience. When we have empathy for a friend and offer counsel often it comes from what we have learned through our own mistakes. Perhaps Eliphaz has had times of difficulty in his life and could trace them back to his own sin or disobedience and God brought him peace, strength, and restoration in those times. He may simply be taking his own personal experience and extending it to his friend with no real idea of what is happening behind the scenes. I guess it reminds us to listen more more when trying to help someone else and not just soley rely on our own life experience.
