Reading along with us in Job? Here’s today’s reading:

Job 32 (NIV)

Elihu
1 So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. 2 But Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, became very angry with Job for justifying himself rather than God. …..Continue Reading

  1. Enter Elihu, the young man who seems to think he has all the answers. Clearly annoyed with Job and the three friends, he feels it is his time to be heard. He certainly does not enter humbly and in a loving tone but rather seemingly thinking he has all the answers. While I don’t think only older generations should have a say, the older I get the more respect I have for the words of my elders. The more experience you have in life the more it makes you appreciate the experience and wisdom of those older than you. My mom used to say “you will understand one day” and at the time it annoyed me so and yet now I say it to my own children because it is so true. So many things in this life are learned from experience and we seem adamant to learn things the hard way rather than just listening to the experience handed down from our elders.

  2. Elihu is wise to wait, but is true in saying that wisdom comes from the Lord and so anyone can be a spokesperson for that. He is also wise to see error in both Job and his three counselors, because none of them had responded the way God would have. Job did better than them though. He is also wise to not show bias or seek to flatter anyone. And yet he is not wise to respond in anger, or be thinking about his response than truly listening…if his words are boiling up within. He is also not wise if he thinks he has all the right answers. If he seeks to defend God and encourage unmitigated faith in Him regardless of circumstances, that is a good thing. But he needs to be careful if he thinks he knows what is going on, because it will take God speaking for them to come to grips with that.
