Reading along with us in Job? Here’s today’s reading:
Job 18 (NIV)
Bildad
1Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
2“When will you end these speeches?

So back to the accusatory “friends” of Job who can only see things from their vantage point and presume God can only act in one way. So Job, bad things have happened to you, so you must be an evil man. Bildad breaks down all the ways that evil people reap the negative returns for their behavior. They all ring true, but do not apply to Job.

The fight gets ugly and Bildad goes for the throat! Even to the point where he accuses Job of not knowing God. While we can recognize that Job’s situation is pretty bad, it’s like these so-called friends never knew him at all. His life before was one of a good, honest, and righteous man which is why God knew allowing this to happen to him in particular would be so effective. However, his friends have quickly forgotten the Job of before and jumped to a conclussion that should feel very inconsistent with what that already knew about him…very sad!
Job 18
Regarding verse 3, my thought was “if the shoe fits wear it.” The rest of the chapter isn’t very uplifting for Job. Boy, who needs friends like that?
We know that no one is righteous (although according to Ezekiel Job was righteous enough) but these friends of Job lack the humility and self awareness to just keep their mouths shut and say “there but for the grace of God go I.”
