Jeremiah 5 (NIV)

Not One Is Upright
1“Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem,
look around and consider,
search through her squares.
If you can find but one person
who deals honestly and seeks the truth,
I will forgive this city.
2 Although they say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’
still they are swearing falsely.”
3 Lord, do not your eyes look for truth?
You struck them, but they felt no pain;
you crushed them, but they refused correction.
They made their faces harder than stone
and refused to repent.............Continue Reading

  1. Jerusalem and not one honest person So hard to believe. One honest person and God woild have spared the city. Even the leaders rejected God verse 5. God held them responsible for the sins of their children who followed their example. How much are we responsible for how are children respond to God. Babylon is coming to take over Israel. People heard this and did not repent. How stubborn can the heart get!! Jeremiah sums up his prophecy. Vs 21. Eyes but do not see. Ears but do not hear.

  2. How gracious and yet harsh God can be. He doesn’t take sin and unbelief lightly, and yet at the slightest indication of repentance, He withholds proper judgement and makes a way for wholeness. Just imagine not one honest person found. And yet in His mercy He sends Jeremiah to look. Well if it’s not in the streets maybe it might be in those who lead….and yet not even there. And now God is just being consistent with what He has said and putting in place the things that are intended to correct and redirect. And yet the people remain in their prideful ways and think they are ok. God is certainly not one to be trifled with and He will have us understand the truth the hard way or the easy way. And the truth is the only thing that He can accept and promote. And yet the people are clueless. God has been good and has provided for them, but they have rejected Him and been utterly unfaithful. So what should they expect God to do? His grace and His commitment to correct are both reasons to follow Him. May we seek and follow Him and learn from His discipline, and make a choice to discipline ourselves so God does not need to.

  3. Hard to believe there was not one honest person among them! From a common man to the leadership all had turned away.
Funny that they would not recognize that God who had the power to keep them safe in war, feed and clothe them in the dessert, who had showed them through His mercy and grace how powerful He is; also has the power to destroy them as well. You can’t take for granted that while His desire is relationship with us, He is a father first and will correct when necessary! I do not like to punish my children but I know it needs to be done for their own good and protection and our Father in heaven feels the same way about us.

  4. God is looking through the whole land for an honest person and finds none. Even so, He doesn’t make a complete end of them.

“Nevertheless in those days,” says the Lord, “I will not make a complete end of you. 19 And it will be when you say, ‘Why does the Lord our God do all these things to us?’ then you shall answer them, ‘Just as you have forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so you shall serve aliens in a land that is not yours.”
