Jeremiah 44 (NIV)

Disaster Because of Idolatry
1 This word came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews living in Lower Egypt—in Migdol, Tahpanhes and Memphis—and in Upper Egypt: 2“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You saw the great disaster I brought on Jerusalem and on all the towns of Judah. Today they lie deserted and in ruins 3 because of the evil they have done. They aroused my anger by burning incense to and worshiping other gods that neither they nor you nor your ancestors ever knew.........Continue Reading

  1. We may feel like the Old Testament is not applicable today but it is so relevant because we make all the same mistakes. Putting things before God, following his commands when convenient and yet straying away when it better suits us or because we get impatient when the answer we want doesn’t come or doesn’t come in the time we hope. These people seem so lost and yet we aren’t much different. Jeremiah’s words and warnings from God are still relevant to us because when we step out of God’s will and desire for us we bring destruction upon ourselves and luckily not always in the way of sword and famine but He will not bless what we do apart from Him.

These chapters remind me to put Him first, to make sure I am seeking His will and not my own, and PATIENCE because God’s timing is not mine and I need to trust He knows the bigger picture for my life and the plans He has for me.

  2. How faithful God had been to His people and how incredibly unfaithful they have been to Him. He told them what to do throughout their history and told them what would happen if they didn’t. He sent warning after warning about what would happen if they continue in defiance to Him. And here He does it one more time. And the people blatantly say no, and attribute blessing to false gods and the hardship to them not being faithful to them. How much is that like our day that people reject God and then reinterpret things according to their understanding and call right, wrong and wrong, right? Or give credit to other things that God is responsible for, or assign blame to God when they or others are responsible? It is no wonder that God responds to this greatest expression of pride and defiance with assurance that they will be eliminated. Then they will see who the real God is. We never want to find ourselves in their shoes with that attitude.
