Reading along with us in Jeremiah? Here’s today’s reading:

Jeremiah 3 (NIV)

1“If a man divorces his wife
and she leaves him and marries another man,
should he return to her again?
Would not the land be completely defiled?
But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers—
would you now return to me?”
declares the Lord.
2“Look up to the barren heights and see.
Is there any place where you have not been ravished?
By the roadside you sat waiting for lovers,
sat like a nomad in the desert.
You have defiled the land
with your prostitution and wickedness.............Continue Reading

  1. What a fitting analogy marriage is for ours and the Israelites relationship with God. As a man and woman are to be faithful to each other and not find satisfaction or fulfillment in another, so we are to be faithful to God. And the Israelites had not been. They had sought relationship elsewhere and were willing to connect with just about anyone who was available, effectively prostituting herself with foreign gods. And God sent correction to them, but it didn’t bring them back as it should have. And now Judah has done the same. I wonder how hard it was for Judah to hear from God that they were worse off than Israel? God’s point? They should have known better. But how good for Israel, Judah and us to hear that God always welcomes us back….even more through and because of Jesus. He is willing to forgive and restore, but we must be willing to take him up on His offer and make things right with Him. Return faithless people God cries to them and us. Let us find our fulfillment and satisfaction through and with Him and not seek other resources outside of Him and His will.

  2. God’s analogy of marriage, faithfulness, and adultery drives home His desire for us to keep Him first in all things. When His people put other things before Him it is heartbreaking to Him like one who has discovered their partner has been unfaithful. But unlike us who can have such trouble forgiving, He is there willing and able to restore that relationship. He just asks us to acknowledge our guilt, seek forgiveness and His mercy is there to forgive us.

  3. Repent! Judah and Israel!

    “Return, you backsliding children,
And I will heal your backslidings.”

“Indeed we do come to You,
For You are the Lord our God.
Truly, in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills,
    And from the multitude of mountains;
Truly, in the Lord our God
    Is the salvation of Israel.
    For shame has devoured
The labor of our fathers from our youth—
    Their flocks and their herds,
    Their sons and their daughters.
We lie down in our shame,
    And our reproach covers us.
For we have sinned against the Lord our God,
    We and our fathers,
From our youth even to this day,
And have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

  4. Echos of Revelation and the end times in chapter 3 when it speaks of all nations turning to Jerusalem and honoring the Lord

17At that time they will call Jerusalem The Throne of the Lord, and all nations will gather in Jerusalem to honor the name of the Lord.
