Reading along with us in Jeremiah? Here’s today’s reading:

Jeremiah 17 (NIV)

1“Judah’s sin is engraved with an iron tool,
inscribed with a flint point,
on the tablets of their hearts
and on the horns of their altars.
2 Even their children remember
their altars and Asherah poles
beside the spreading trees
and on the high hills.
3 My mountain in the land
and your wealth and all your treasures
I will give away as plunder,
together with your high places,
because of sin throughout your country............Continue Reading

  1. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
And whose hope is the Lord.
For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
    And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”

This reminds me of Psalm 1.

I was also thinking of pastor’s teaching about holiness today when reading about God’s telling Judah to Hallow the Sabbath day.

“Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; nor carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day, nor do any work, but hallow the Sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.”

During your teaching, Pastor, (before you defined holiness) I also thought, “well, define holiness. It can’t really be defined.” I immediately thought of where the Psalmist says, “there is none like you.”

Steve and I were talking about it on the way home and he mentioned the word, numinous. Numinous (/ˈnjuːmɪnəs/) is a term derived from the Latin numen, meaning “arousing spiritual or religious emotion; mysterious or awe-inspiring.”

      1. I made a few more connections to holiness. I am studying in 2 Samuel for our women’s study. I am in 2 Samuel 6 where Uzzah is struck dead and I couldn’t help but refer back to the story of the ark in the possession of the Philistines. I was thinking that Uzzah was struck dead because the Ark is NOT an idol, that it needed to be steadied or propped up like the Philistines’ god, Dagon. It just drives home the difference between a pagan idol and the ark of God. It even describes the ark in 6:2 “..to bring up from there the ark of God, whose name is called by the Name, the Lord of Hosts, who dwells between the cherubim.” This is not just a golden box. It is called by the Name…it is the dwelling place of the Lord of Hosts.

  2. Judah’s punishment is deserved and their sin is flagrant and has been for some time. They should know full well what brings God’s cursing and His blessing and what a stark difference is found in the results of both. And in our time of drought, we know the difference between plants that receive water and those that don’t. I too was reminded of Psalm 1 as I read the passage quoted above. And one of the most revealing scriptures in the Bible is found here, Jeremiah 17:9. Verse 12 has Jeremiah speaking to God as opposed to God speaking to Jeremiah. How comforting for us to know that God is our refuge and He can make life different for us even as He is punishing others. He is our protector and defender.

And wow, how important keeping the Sabbath is to God for God to say if you would just do that, then you could remain in the land. But they just don’t do it! May we be much more faithful to things put before us by God!

  3. My take away from this chapter was cursed is those who trust in man and blessed is those who trust in God. That blessing may not look they way we think….it will not be worldly wealth or an escape from any hard times but it will come through peace, joy and contentment through it all.
